The Benefits of Nylon-Elastane in Performance Apparel
If you read the composition label on most high-performance training pieces, you'll see some ratio of nylon to elastane. There's a reason this blend became the backbone of the category. Here's what each fibre brings and why the combination works.
Nylon: durability and feel
Nylon (polyamide) is one of the strongest textile fibres in common use. It resists abrasion, holds up to repeated washing, and has a smooth, almost silky hand that feels premium against the skin. On its own, though, it doesn't stretch much — which is where elastane comes in.
Elastane: stretch and recovery
Elastane — known by brand names like Lycra or spandex — can stretch many times its length and snap back to shape. In performance apparel, this does two jobs: it lets the garment move with your body in every direction, and it provides “recovery”, meaning the piece returns to its original shape instead of bagging out at the knees and elbows. A blend of around 12–20% elastane gives most performance garments their stretch and support.
Why the blend beats either fibre alone
Combine the two and you get the best of both: the durability, smoothness and structure of nylon, with the four-way stretch and shape-retention of elastane. The result is a fabric that moves freely, holds its fit, lasts through heavy use, and feels good doing it. That's why it's the default choice for compression layers, training shorts and technical tops.
Moisture management
Unlike cotton, which absorbs and holds water, nylon-elastane fabrics are typically engineered to wick moisture — moving sweat away from the skin to the surface where it evaporates. This keeps you drier and more comfortable through a session and reduces that heavy, soaked feeling.
The sustainability angle
Increasingly, performance brands use recycled nylon (made from pre- and post-consumer waste) without losing performance. Combined with the fibre's natural durability, a recycled nylon-elastane piece that lasts for years is a genuinely more responsible choice than cheaper garments replaced every season.
Where VELCORE fits
VELCORE builds its foundation pieces — including COMP-01 and TRN-01 — on nylon-elastane for exactly these reasons: stretch, recovery, durability and moisture control, with recycled fibres where possible. Explore the engineering behind the collection in our About page.
