How to Choose Compression Clothing: A Complete Guide
Compression clothing has moved from the elite-sport niche into everyday training wardrobes — but most people buying it have never been told how it works or how it should fit. This guide covers the essentials.
What compression clothing actually does
Compression garments apply gentle, graduated pressure to the body. The aim is to support the muscles, improve the feeling of stability during movement, and help you stay aware of your body's position under load. Many athletes also find compression pieces help them feel “pulled together” and ready before a session.
When to wear it
Compression works well as a base layer during training — especially for lifting, running and high-output sessions — and as a first layer under everyday clothing when you want support and moisture management through a long day. It's versatile precisely because it sits close to the skin and disappears under everything else.
How it should fit
This is where most people go wrong. A compression top should feel snug and second-skin — noticeably closer than a regular t-shirt — but never so tight that it restricts breathing or range of movement. If it digs in or limits how far you can reach, it's too small. If it bunches or slides, it's too big. When between sizes, size down for more compression, up for a lighter hold.
What fabric to look for
The key fibre is elastane (also called spandex or Lycra), blended with nylon. The elastane provides the stretch and recovery — the ability to compress and snap back — while the nylon adds durability and a smooth feel. Look for around 15–20% elastane for genuine compression. Good compression fabric also manages moisture, pulling sweat away so the layer stays dry.
Care matters more with technical fabric
Compression pieces last longest with cold washes, no tumble drying and no fabric softener (which coats fibres and kills both stretch and moisture management). Treated well, a quality compression top holds its support for years.
Where VELCORE fits
VELCORE's COMP-01 is built on these principles: a 240gsm nylon-elastane knit with modulated compression and flatlock seams, engineered to support without restricting and to move from the session into the day. It's the foundation piece of Collection 001.
